FitBit Local Yoga Event | Washington DC

Who would have thought I would find myself combining two of my greatest passions in life through this business?! I have been so fortunate over the past few months to discover an unexpected type of photography in my business– yoga photography!

A little backstory: I’ve been a yogi since my freshman year of college and I found the practice, like I believe many do, when I needed a mental outlet.

I was involved in a lot of activities throughout high school (like multiple practices/meetings each evening, a lot) and when I got to college I suddenly had many, many unclaimed hours in my days. My normally jam-packed brain didn’t know what to do with so much free time and my anxiety levels immediately shot up.

Luckily, I discovered the list of free classes at our student fitness center and yoga jumped out at me. All I knew of yoga was the stereotypes, think blissed-out yogis wearing tie-dye, but the idea of finding a way to calm my anxiety was enough for me to register.

I dragged my friend Victoria to our first class and neither of us have looked back. I’ve been practicing ever since and she’s actually a certified instructor now! (We went on our first yoga retreat together last month in Costa Rica- stay tuned for the images!)

In the end, practicing yoga helped me transition into college life all those years ago and has helped me through every stage of my life since. I’m so grateful to have found an outlet and personal practice that helps me maintain both mental and physical wellness (and I think most yogis would agree the mental impact far outweighs the physical!).

If you’ve never tried it and could use a little zen in your life, I encourage you to take a class or two! There are so many different styles and I’ve found the best classes happen when you really connect with the teacher so it sometimes takes trying out a few styles and teachers before you experience how amazing yoga can be. I promise, it’s worth it!

My two favorite instructors in Washington, DC, Cynthia and Jessica, have slightly different styles, but both teach physically-challenging classes charged with emotional and spiritual guidance. When I leave their classes, I feel like my body is floating, mind is clear, and heart is wide open.

Cynthia and Jessica recently led a FitBit Local DC event (Cynthia is a FitBit ambassador) at the Georgetown Lululemon store. Everyone had a great time flowing in the beautiful, bright loft space and enjoyed Tasty6 juices (yay, local company!) and Kind bars afterwards. Take a peek at the images below and be sure to see when FitBit Local is hosting a free event in your area!
